VocALign’s Success in US daytime-TV drama seriesWednesday 6th March 2002, Epsom, UK
The award-winning VocALign® audio processing software, from Synchro Arts Limited, is being extensively deployed at CBS Television City on the long-established US daytime-TV drama series The Young and the Restless for dialogue replacement work, as well as for music and sound effects editing. VocALign is helping the show’s post mixer Ronnie Kimball to achieve the tight production turnarounds required by the demanding schedule, which involves a one-hour drama going to air 5 days a week. Ronnie, who is responsible for the show’s post-production audio, commented on the part played by VocALign during post-production: "Although my main application for VocALign on the show is dialogue replacement, I also use it for music replacement – for example, we have a number of instances where the music is married to dialogue, and some of these scenes may be used in a later show as flashbacks. As the show is syndicated in 26 countries, the dialogue is obviously replaced, but the music has to be in the same place. Using VocALign, I can take the music, drop it on top of the scene containing the married music and dialogue, and VocALign simply disregards the dialogue and puts the music where it’s supposed to be! I can just put it in one place and trim it back to the spot – this would be very hard to do without an automatic alignment tool, and it speeds my dialogue replacement up enormously. VocALign is a tool I use every single day - I wouldn’t live without it! "With replacement dialogue, I don’t even worry about sync now - the artists can just read the line live, and all I need to check is the tone and whether it’s the right line. I dump it into VocALign and it replaces the line for me. I also use VocALign for sound effects replacement, taking old effects as a guide track and putting the new effects in as a batch, as I don’t have to go through and replace them one by one – for example, replacing 6 gunshots as a single region. I use both the Pro and the Audio Suite versions of VocALign and they are great time-savers, which means I can spend more time surfing!" Kimball spends approximately 8 hours working on the music, sound effects and dialogue for each one-hour show of The Young and the Restless, with the total throughput involving some 220 shows per year. About The Young and the Restless The Young and the Restless premiered in 1973 and has been the number one daytime TV drama in the USA for more than twelve consecutive years. It revolves around the rivalries, romances, hopes and fears of the residents of the fictional Midwestern metropolis, Genoa City. In June 2001, The Young and the Restless celebrated another milestone with the launch of its new High Definition format, becoming the first daytime program in history to transmit in High Definition. The show is produced by CPT Holdings, Inc., for CBS Television. About VocALign VocALign is an editing tool designed to synchronise two audio signals automatically at the touch of a button. It massively speeds up audio synchronisation tasks and increases the quality of results, working by automatically "micro-editing" the new or replacement audio signal to align the timing of its modulations to match that of a guide signal. VocALign PRO also includes TimeMod, a highly efficient mono and stereo time compression/expansion function. The recently launched VocALign Project products offer even more affordable versions to suit all studio budgets. The range of applications for VocALign typically include:
