Kevin Madigan, a seasoned live and studio mix engineer, has been behind the scenes with some of the biggest names in music—Santana, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, David Gilmour, Ray LaMontagne, Lana Del Rey, Smashing Pumpkins, and more.
He recently wrapped up work on the Black Panther II: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, which, like many of his other projects, involved pushing the boundaries of sound and mixing.
We sat down with Kevin to dive into his experiences with Revoice Pro 4, the software that's become an essential tool in his mixing arsenal.
Along with his work in Dolby Atmos, Kevin’s insights into editing vocals and enhancing tracks offer a glimpse into the future of music production.
Kevin’s path to becoming one of the most sought-after engineers began after college, when he initially worked in acoustics.
"I ended up doing live sound gigs, then recording and mixing," he recalls. "It was a natural progression from there. I just kept going."
With a strong background in live sound, Kevin has worked his way into the studio, where his quick decision-making skills in mixing are an asset.
"My live sound experience helps me make fast and accurate choices for levels, dynamics, and EQ," he explains.
These skills are invaluable when it comes to mixing in the studio, especially with the fast-paced demands of modern productions.
Revoice Pro is a game-changing tool for vocal editing, and Kevin is a big fan. He recently used it during the mixing of a live album by David Crosby.
"There were four very talented vocalists in the band," Kevin shares. "On the night, it’s all about capturing that fleeting, incredible performance.
But when mixing the recording, we had a chance to enhance it with Revoice Pro for alignment, making it even better."
The speed and efficiency of Revoice Pro allow Kevin to cut down on the usual time-consuming editing processes.
"The speed and quality that it works at is amazing," he says. "What might normally take hours of tedious editing can now be done in minutes, allowing me to focus on the music rather than the mechanics."
Kevin’s work isn't limited to traditional stereo mixes—he also mixes in Dolby Atmos, which has expanded the creative possibilities for engineers.
"The creative possibilities for mixing in Atmos are huge," he explains. "It can be very exciting for someone to hear music in an immersive way, especially for the first time. It really draws the listener into the song."
When it comes to vocals in Atmos mixes, Kevin’s approach shifts. "In a traditional mix, I’m looking for a space to fit the vocals in.
But with Atmos, I have much more freedom to place elements anywhere in the 3D space.
Of course, that extra freedom comes with its own challenges—you don’t want to lose the character or impact of a song because of distracting mix positioning."
Kevin's work on Atmos mixes in 2022 includes standout projects like the Black Panther II: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, where he worked on Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up.”
"That track is beautiful," Kevin says. "It’s one of those mixes that really showcases the power of Atmos, creating a sense of space and immersion that you can’t get with a standard stereo mix."
Other notable projects from that year include Lizzo’s Special album and Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.
Kevin worked alongside renowned engineer Manny Marroquin on these records, further exploring the potential of immersive audio.
"It’s a different kind of excitement when you realize just how much you can do with sound in an Atmos mix."
For those looking to follow in Kevin’s footsteps, his advice is simple: "Work on everything you can and get as much experience as possible." Whether it’s live sound, recording, or mixing, gaining hands-on experience is key to becoming a well-rounded engineer.
Kevin’s career shows how versatility and a willingness to adapt to new technologies can lead to some incredible opportunities.
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned engineer, Revoice Pro 4 offers incredible speed and accuracy for editing vocals.
As Kevin demonstrates, it’s a tool that allows for quick, professional-level editing, reducing the time spent on mundane tasks and freeing up more time for the creative process.
